The documentation took most of the morning.
He had been building it in pieces since the previous day — environmental data from the district's own atmospheric monitoring network, calibration records from the standard equipment that Traffic used for residential assessments, cross-referenced against the specific readings that Dieu had filed for C-7. The work was technical and careful. Nothing fabricated. Everything real, selected and framed to tell a story that the raw data could legitimately support.
The story the data told: the construction project two blocks over had been generating electromagnetic interference patterns that affected ambient energy readings throughout the sector. The interference was real — he had documented it himself when it started, months ago, because the interference had been affecting his own perimeter sensors. The effects on Traffic's scanning equipment were plausible because the equipment types were similar. The calibration variances that would explain why Dieu's assessments came back inconclusive were real variances, just not the variances that had actually caused the inconclusive results.
He finished the first version at nine forty-seven.
He revised one section where the framing was too tidy. He made it less tidy — more like the work of someone who had assembled data and noticed a pattern, not someone who had known in advance what conclusion they were working toward.
He saved it.
He looked at the ambient display: eighteen point seven.
He was thinking about the documentation when the intercom buzzed.
---
He looked at the camera before answering.
Co Tham. Alone at the main entrance. The official entrance. The one that said: this is a business call.
He looked at the basement door.
Mien had come upstairs from the morning session forty minutes ago and was at the desk with the notebook. She looked at him when he looked at the basement door.
"Basement," he said quietly. "Take whatever you need. The entity will follow you."
She was already standing. "How long?"
"Unknown. I'll signal through the contract when it's clear."
She nodded. She picked up the notebook. She went to the basement door.
He pressed the intercom response.
"I'll be right out."
He picked up the maintenance clipboard.
---
Co Tham had brought someone with him.
The second person was younger, compact, carrying a bag that had the weight distribution of equipment rather than personal items. He had been noting weight distributions on bags for three years. The bag was not heavy enough for the fixed-array scanner. It was the right weight for the portable enhanced unit, the gen-3's successor.
He knew Traffic's gen-4 portable scanner from the intercepts. He knew its classification threshold.
He gave none of this awareness any visible expression.
"Morning," he said. "This is the informal walkthrough you mentioned?"
"That's right." Co Tham's manner was as it had always been — professionally warm. "We're doing early checks before the official partnership schedule kicks in. Familiarization, mostly. Making sure we understand the building layout before the formal visits start." He gestured toward the second person. "This is our technical liaison — he'll be handling the equipment setup during official visits, so it helps to have him see the space ahead of time."
The technical liaison nodded. He had the specific quality of someone who was there to do a job and was not going to be chatty about it.
Lam Uyen nodded. He held the gate open.
---
The walkthrough moved through the building at the pace of something that was not quite what it said it was.
The technical liaison moved through the spaces with the quality of someone doing a visual survey while appearing to simply walk. He did not open the bag. He did not take out equipment. But his attention passed over things in a sequence that Lam Uyen recognized as a scan-assist orientation.
He was standing near the stairwell when Lam Uyen noted this.
He was standing near the stairwell, and the stairwell led to the basement.
Lam Uyen said: "The main concern we've had is the northwest corner — the external wall there gets more moisture incursion than the rest of the building, and I've been tracking it for a couple of years. If it's useful for your baseline assessment, I can show you the documentation."
He had said this as he turned in the direction opposite the stairwell. Not away from it conspicuously — simply, in the course of turning to gesture toward the northwest corner, he had oriented the conversation away from the stairwell.
Co Tham looked at him.
It was a fraction of a second. The specific quality of someone who had noticed something without being sure what it was.
"That would be useful," Co Tham said.
They went to the northwest corner.
---
The documentation for the northwest moisture issue was real. He had been tracking it for two years. The readings were genuine. He spent five minutes walking Co Tham and the technical liaison through it.
By the time he finished, they were back in the lobby.
By the time they were back in the lobby, the technical liaison had not spent another extended period near the stairwell.
Co Tham looked at the building with the expression he wore when he was arriving at a conclusion.
"Clean building," he said. "Good maintenance culture."
"It runs itself, mostly," Lam Uyen said. "The residents are long-term. They know how things work."
"That makes our job easier." Co Tham smiled. "The partnership program works best in buildings with stable communities. Less noise, cleaner baselines."
He said baselines in the way that someone said baselines when they meant both things the word could mean.
"Makes sense," Lam Uyen said.
Co Tham turned toward the exit.
Then he stopped.
"Your family member," he said. "Still visiting?"
Lam Uyen looked at him.
"She is," he said.
"I still haven't had the chance to talk with her properly. She's not here today?"
He held Co Tham's gaze.
One beat. Not longer than a person would take to locate the information.
"No," he said. "She went out this morning."
Co Tham nodded.
"Of course," he said. "Another time."
"Sure," Lam Uyen said.
Co Tham left.
Lam Uyen stood in the lobby until the gate had closed and the camera confirmed they had turned the corner.
He stood there for a moment after that.
He thought about the sentence he had said. She went out this morning.
He thought about the basement, where Mien was.
He thought about what he had said and what was true and the specific distance between them.
He went to the basement.
---
The basement was quiet.
Mien was sitting on the floor against the wall opposite the entity's corner. She had the notebook open.
She looked up when he came down the stairs.
He said: "Clear. Eighteen point seven held."
She looked at him in the specific way she had developed for reading him — not the inventory gaze, not the assessment gaze, the other one.
"You're holding something," she said.
He looked at the ambient reading on his phone. Eighteen point seven, stable.
"Co Tham asked about you," he said.
"What did he ask?"
"He asked if you were home." He looked at the phone. "I told him you'd gone out."
She was quiet for a moment.
"Was that all?" she said.
"Yes." He looked at the corner where the entity was. "The technical liaison had a scanner in the bag. Gen-4, probably. I redirected the walkthrough before he could run it near the stairwell."
"Did Co Tham notice?"
"Yes."
She processed that.
"So he knows there's something you're protecting down here," she said.
"He suspects. He doesn't know." He looked at the ambient reading. "Eighteen point seven is below the gen-4's classification threshold. It was close."
She was quiet.
"We should go up," he said.
She stood. She looked at the entity's corner. "I'll be back in the morning," she said.
The entity was still. But its stillness had the quality of something that had heard.
They went upstairs.
---
He made dinner at six.
She set the table. He brought the food.
They ate.
He said: "He asked if my family member was home."
She looked up.
"I told him you'd gone out."
She held his gaze.
He said it without elaboration — the sentence, the specific sentence, the one that had been in his chest since he said it in the lobby.
She set her chopsticks down.
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said: "But I have a home."
He looked at her.
It was not a contradiction. It was not a correction. It was a statement of something true, offered in the specific way she offered true things — directly, without decoration, because plainness was more honest than framing.
She was saying: whatever you told him, this is what is real. This is mine. I have it.
He looked at her.
One second. Two.
"Yes," he said. "You do."
She looked at her bowl.
He looked at the table.
They finished dinner.
---
At ten, before he turned off the lamp, he checked the patrol pattern in the sector adjacent to C-7.
It was different.
A small adjustment in the timing of the community watch patrol — the kind of shift that would mean nothing to anyone who hadn't been tracking the pattern for months.
He had been tracking the pattern for months.
He finalized the documentation package for Dieu.
He looked at the ambient reading: eighteen point four.
He looked at the entity camera: stable.
He looked at Mien on the sofa — asleep already.
He thought about "but I have a home" and "yes, you do."
He thought about four days.
He looked at the log.
He looked at the day forty entry: what I said on day forty. That is also still operative.
He thought: four days. Ten days. She has a home.
He turned off the lamp.
---
Day forty-eight.
Ambient: eighteen point two. He noted it.
Mien came out and looked at the display.
"Eighteen point two," she said. "Four days."
"Four days."
He brought the second cup to the windowsill.
"I'm going to deliver the documentation today," he said. "Drop point. No direct contact."
She nodded.
"What does it say?" she said.
"That her inconclusive assessments were correct. Environmental data supporting the interference explanation." He looked at the window. "All real. I didn't fabricate anything."
"But it doesn't tell the whole story."
"No. It tells a story the data can support. That's different from fabrication."
"It protects her."
"Yes. Or gives her something to point to." He paused. "Whether it's enough depends on how hard Co Tham looks."
She looked at the window. "I want her to be okay."
He looked at the window.
"I know," he said.
He delivered the documentation at eleven-twenty. He went to the basement afterward and updated the entity on the current situation. He came back upstairs. He worked.
Mrs. Nam came that evening with steamed buns and talked for thirty minutes and patted Mien's hand when she left.
"Good to have you here," she said.
"I'm glad to be here," Mien said.
Mrs. Nam nodded as though this was exactly what she had expected to hear. She left.
The room held what she had left in it.
---
Day forty-nine.
Ambient: seventeen point nine. Below eighteen for the first time.
He made tea. He set the second cup on the windowsill.
Mien came out and looked at the display.
"Seventeen point nine," she said.
"Yes."
"Three days."
"Yes."
They stood at the window in the morning light.
He was aware of her beside him.
He was aware of the city outside.
He was aware of three days.
He was also aware that seventeen point nine had come from forty-nine days of work and one entity learning suppression in a basement and one woman teaching it and one man making notes in a log.
And he was aware that the number meant something other than operational success.
It meant that the things he was protecting were all still here.
He looked at the window.
He drank his tea.
She drank her tea.
Three days.
After that: whatever came next.
He went to work.
The morning continued, ordinary and otherwise, with the weight of what was coming and the specific quality of a room where two people had been for forty-nine days and intended to continue.
