The ninety-minute session was the longest they had run.
He monitored from the desk — not the System readings specifically, but the ambient display, watching the number hold and then, incrementally, decline. The entity had been in the basement for three days now and the sessions had developed their own rhythm, which was the rhythm of something that was learning rather than being taught.
The distinction mattered to him. Mien had explained it twice now: the entity was not receiving information and applying it, the entity was recognizing something it had known in a different form and integrating it with what it currently was. Faster than learning from scratch. Different from muscle memory. Something in between.
He watched the number.
Seventeen point six at the start. By the forty-minute mark: seventeen point four. By the end of the ninety minutes: seventeen point two.
He wrote it in the log.
---
The message arrived at nine-forty-seven.
Not through the System, not through any official channel. Through a routing protocol he had set up years ago as a dead-drop channel — infrastructure for the kind of contact that had no business going through normal channels. He had never used it. He had maintained it the way he maintained everything that might someday be needed.
Someone who knew it existed had used it.
The message was short:
*Case review initiated. Pattern assessment. 3-5 days.*
He read it.
He read it again.
He looked at the routing. The origin was Traffic's internal infrastructure. The timing was consistent with his conversation with Dieu two days ago.
He thought about: *case review initiated.*
He thought about the documentation package he had left at the drop point.
He thought about: *3-5 days.*
He sat with the message.
Then he went back to monitoring the session.
---
Mien came upstairs at eleven-fifteen.
She looked at him before she looked at the display — the reading expression, the one that registered him first and the numbers second. She had developed this over fifty days.
He turned the phone toward her.
She read the message.
She said: "The documentation. Did she receive it?"
"The patrol pattern changed the day after I left it. That was her acknowledgment."
"So she has it."
"Yes."
"But she doesn't know if it's enough."
"No. And neither do I."
Mien looked at the message. She looked at the ambient display: seventeen point two.
"Three to five days," she said.
"Yes."
"That overlaps with the active search period."
"The search reaches this sector in two days. Case review is three to five. There's a window of one to three days where both are happening simultaneously."
She looked at the display.
"And if the case review goes against her—"
"Then Traffic has a formal record of an operative who produced inconsistent assessments in two locations. They'll look harder at both."
She was quiet.
He looked at the routing on his phone.
He thought about Dieu at the eastern gate, saying: *the thing I hoped my decision would do.* He thought about what it cost to make choices that had consequences you couldn't control.
"I know what she's feeling," Mien said.
He looked at her.
"Not the specifics," she said. "The thing underneath. Making a choice and then watching whether it was the right one while not being able to do anything else." She paused. "I did it in the structure. Those months before you came."
He looked at the phone.
He thought: yes.
"The documentation may be enough," he said. "It depends on how the review is structured."
"Can you find out which?"
"I can try to intercept communications about the review. A day, maybe."
"Then try," she said.
---
The outdoor interface test was Mien's suggestion.
She brought it up at two in the afternoon.
"If the entity needs to move — if the basement becomes untenable — I need to know if the interface works outside the basement configuration."
He thought about that. "The System cover relies on the basement's physical properties. If the entity is outside—"
"I know. That's why I need to test it."
He looked at the courtyard camera. At the timing of resident movement. At the patrol schedule.
"7:40 to 8:00," he said. "After Mrs. Nam's lights go off. Before the building check."
"That works."
"I'll be at the gate," he said.
---
At 7:42, he was at the gate.
The courtyard was empty. The last resident had come in twelve minutes earlier.
The street was clear for nineteen minutes, and then Mien was at the gate.
"Twenty-two seconds longer than last time," she said. "Forty-five seconds of stable interface, outdoors, no System cover. Clean."
He looked at the street.
He looked at the gate.
He thought: if Co Tham had come around that corner five minutes ago.
He thought: he didn't.
"Good," he said.
She looked at him.
"You were thinking about what would have happened if Co Tham had come," she said.
"Yes."
"He didn't."
"No."
She was quiet for a moment. "We're doing things that can't be hidden if they're seen."
"Yes."
"That's different from the past fifty days."
He thought about that.
"Yes," he said. "It's different."
"We need to get better at quick dispersal," she said. "A protocol for ending it fast."
He nodded. "I'll build it."
They went back inside.
---
Dinner was simple. He made what was available and didn't think about whether it was enough.
She set the table. He brought the food.
They ate.
After a while, she said: "You've been quiet since the message."
He thought about that. "I've been thinking about the variables."
"I know." She set the chopsticks down. "But you're not just thinking about the variables. You're — holding something."
He looked at the table.
"Dieu," he said.
"Yes. And the outdoor test. And what happens when the active search gets here. And the partnership visit." She looked at him. "All of it."
He looked at the table.
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
He was quiet.
She said: "I don't want you to have to do this alone."
He looked at her.
Not operational. About him, specifically.
"I'm not doing it alone," he said. "You're here."
She shook her head — not in disagreement, in the way you shook your head when someone had understood the words but not what the words were pointing at.
"That's not what I mean," she said.
He looked at her.
She looked at the table.
"All of it," she said. "What you're carrying. Dieu, the entity, Traffic, the days counting down. You're carrying it the way you carry things — alone. As if carrying it alone is just — the way carrying works."
He looked at the table.
"It is the way it's worked," he said.
She looked at him.
"I was doing that before you arrived," he said. "That's how I've done things."
She held his gaze.
"I know," she said.
One beat.
"That's what I'm saying," she said.
He looked at the table.
He understood what she was saying.
She was saying: you were doing that before I arrived. And I'm here now. And I want you to know that you don't have to keep doing it the same way.
He looked at the table for a long time.
Then he looked at her.
"I know," he said.
She nodded — the nod that filed things.
She picked up her chopsticks.
He picked up his.
They ate.
---
Day fifty-one.
Ambient: seventeen point one.
He wrote it in the log.
He looked at the day fifty entry: *I have not been alone for 50 days.*
One day until the active search.
He made tea.
Mien came out at six-fifteen. Looked at the display.
"One day," she said.
"One day."
She went to the window. He set the second cup on the windowsill.
They stood at the window together.
He was aware of her beside him.
He said: "Case review is pattern audit, not targeted. Better than targeted."
She turned and looked at him.
"You found the communication," she said.
"Last night." He looked at the window. "Pattern audit means they're looking at the whole profile, not specific events. The documentation I prepared speaks to the environmental variables. It might be enough."
"Might," she said.
"Yes. Might." He looked at the window. "I can't know more than that."
She nodded.
They stood at the window. Neither of them said anything for a while.
Then she said: "The outdoor test. I want to run it again today."
He looked at her.
"Earlier," she said. "5:30 PM. Different timing window."
He thought about it. "That works."
"And the quick dispersal protocol — I have a draft."
"Let's review it," he said.
They went to the desk.
They worked.
---
The quick dispersal protocol took ninety minutes to develop. The 5:30 test was clean: forty-five seconds of stable interface, thirty seconds to clear, no anomalies.
He looked at the courtyard afterward.
She was beside him, making the note in the notebook, her handwriting in the margins of something that was also his work — his work and her work together for fifty-one days without either of them deciding that was what it was.
He said: "Thank you."
She looked up from the notebook.
He looked at the courtyard.
"For the outdoor test. For the quick dispersal protocol." He paused. "For last night."
She held the notebook.
She said: "You don't have to thank me."
He looked at the courtyard.
"I know," he said. "I'm saying it anyway."
She looked at the notebook for a moment.
Then she put the pen back in the cup.
They stood in the courtyard doorway for a moment.
He was aware of her beside him. The forty-something days of standing at windows and sitting at desks and walking through the city and standing on a concrete floor in the basement — all of it was present.
He thought: I have not been doing this alone.
He turned and went back inside.
She followed.
They went back to work.
---
That night, he sat at the desk for a long time after she was asleep.
The intercept channels showed nothing new. The case review was in progress. He had updated the contingency plan for both possible outcomes.
The ambient was seventeen point one.
He looked at the entity camera: the corner, the stillness.
He looked at Mien on the sofa — sleeping deeply.
He looked at the day fifty entry: *I have not been alone for 50 days.*
He thought about what she had said: you were doing that before I arrived. That's what I'm saying.
He thought: she's right.
He thought: I have not been holding it alone for fifty-one days. But I have been holding it as if I am.
He thought about the difference.
He thought about what she was saying: she had been here for fifty-one days, and she could see the pattern, and she didn't want it to continue.
He thought: she named the thing I hadn't noticed.
He wrote: *Day 51. Ambient 17.1. Case review ongoing. 1 day. Note: she named the thing I hadn't noticed.*
He looked at the entry.
He left it.
He turned off the lamp.
Tomorrow: the active search.
One day.
He had not been alone for fifty-one days, and he had not noticed the full shape of that, and she had shown it to him.
He went to sleep.
