She spent the first week running numbers she already knew.
This was a habit she recognized in herself: the return to quantitative data when the qualitative conclusions were ones she was not ready to accept. She had observed it in her students, had written about it in a methodological paper in Year Six of Cycle Three under the heading *confirmation bias in self-referential research,* had been, she was now aware, documenting her own tendencies in a paper ostensibly about general methodological problems. She ran the numbers anyway because the habit was faster than the alternative, and the alternative was sitting with conclusions that had no next step she was ready to take.
The numbers said the same thing the qualitative assessment had said. They said it with greater precision and no additional comfort.
Progression rate: three centimeters per decade, measured against the suspension period when she had been running the protocol and not engaging with trigger materials. Rate during active decades with protocol compliance: approximately one and a half centimeters per decade, extrapolated from the monitoring data across the previous five years. Rate during active decades without protocol compliance, extrapolated from the Year One measurements before the protocol had been implemented: approximately two centimeters per decade.
The protocol had worked. It had reduced the progression rate during her active decades by approximately one quarter. It had done nothing to address the progression during suspension, which was the period that accounted for half of each cycle. The net effect of five years of protocol compliance was a progression rate that was slightly better than the unmanaged active rate and dramatically worse than she had hoped when she designed the intervention. She was progressing at a rate that, sustained, would bring her to critical deterioration within three to four decades.
She noted this in the research notebook with the precision she brought to all data entry and then sat with her pen in her hand looking at the number.
Three to four decades. She had been running a protocol that was reducing her lifespan from a terminal event in three to four decades to a terminal event in three to four decades, which was not an improvement by any metric she recognized as meaningful. She had spent five years implementing a careful, systematic, correctly designed intervention that had produced a result indistinguishable from doing nothing.
She put the pen down.
She went to the case files.
She had nine case files in the lower left drawer, organized chronologically by progression rate. She pulled them all and spread them across the desk and read them from the beginning, all nine, in a single sustained reading that took most of the morning. She was reading them differently from how she had read them before: not looking for the mechanism, which she knew, and not looking for the pattern of failure, which she had already identified. She was looking for what she had missed.
Case One: a man in his seventies, closed loop, died of progressive temporal failure. She had noted in Year Two: *introducing new social contacts and activities, prognosis cautiously optimistic.* He had died. The intervention had been social, behavioral, correctly theorized. He had not changed the fundamental structure of his attachment, because the fundamental structure of his attachment was to a memory rather than a person, and you could not resolve a memory through social activity.
Case Two: the researcher whose counterpart had stopped writing. Absence pathway, classic presentation. She had noted: *subject cycling through previous relational dynamic repetitively without generating new experiential data.* The subject had died. The intervention had been therapeutic, behavioral, correctly theorized. The counterpart was not available to participate in the resolution. You could not resolve an absence with the absent party.
Cases Three through Eight: variations on the same two themes. Either the attachment was to a memory that could not be changed by the living subject, or the attachment was to a person who was not accessible for resolution. In every case, the intervention had been behavioral. In every case, the behavior was a correct response to an incorrect diagnosis.
Case Nine: the oldest in her files, a woman she had worked with for four years, the only case with a mixed pathway. Repetition pathway with absence features, complex, the case she had written up at length because it offered interesting theoretical questions. The woman had died in the fourth year of their clinical relationship. But she had died differently from the others: the progression rate had slowed in the final year, had actually reversed in two months before the reversal was overwhelmed by the accumulated damage. She had noted this in the case file as an anomaly — statistically interesting, insufficient data, no clear explanation. She had not developed a hypothesis for the reversal because the subject had died before the reversal could be studied.
She looked at the case file for the reversal period.
The two months of progression reversal corresponded to a period in which the subject had, according to the session notes, been in direct contact with the person who was the object of her attachment. Not resolved contact — the contact had been difficult, had involved significant conflict, had ended without clear resolution. But contact. Direct, present, not mediated through objects or memories or correspondence. The woman had been in the same room as the person she had been reaching toward for thirty years, and the reaching had, for two months, stopped accelerating.
Iris sat with this for a long time.
She had annotated this section of the case file, in Year Three of her work with the subject, with a question mark and the notation: *mechanism unclear, further observation required.* She had not pursued the question because the subject had died before further observation was possible. She had left the question mark in the file and moved on.
She looked at the question mark now.
She thought about the mechanism. She thought about it in the way she thought about theoretical problems: systematically, from the fundamental principles, without letting the conclusion she feared interfere with the direction of the reasoning. The absence pathway operated through the cell's continued orientation toward an unavailable stimulus. The cell was reaching toward something that was not there, exhausting its resources in the sustained effort of an extended posture. The reaching did not stop because the reaching was not behavioral — she had established this with her own monitoring data. The reaching was constitutional.
But in Case Nine's two months of reversal, the stimulus had become available.
If the mechanism of the absence pathway was sustained reaching toward an unavailable stimulus, and the reversal occurred when the stimulus became available, then the logical implication was that the reaching would change in character when the stimulus was present. Not stop — Case Nine's subject had been in conflict with the person, not resolution. But change. The reaching, encountering its object, would reorganize. The orientation would shift from the effort of reaching across a gap to the different effort of being in the presence of what you had been reaching toward.
She wrote this out carefully, in the specific notation she used for theoretical arguments that were still developing: *Hypothesis: absence pathway reversal mechanism. If cellular orientation reorganizes in the presence of the attachment object — from sustained effortful reaching to active present-tense engagement — the energy expenditure profile changes. The reaching, which requires maintaining a sustained posture against an absence, may be more energetically costly than present-tense engagement with an accessible presence.*
She read this back.
She added: *Colloquial statement of hypothesis: the reaching is more exhausting than the having. The cost of wanting something you cannot have may exceed the cost of having it.*
She sat with this.
She thought about the nine case files. She thought about the characteristic shape of all nine trajectories: a sustained plateau or gradual progression for years or decades, followed by acceleration, followed by terminal deterioration. She thought about the fact that in none of the nine cases had the subject had direct, sustained, resolving contact with the person who was the object of the attachment. In all nine cases, the attachment had remained structurally unresolved until the terminal event. She thought about Case Nine's two months and the mechanism she had just articulated.
She thought: I have been treating this as a disease to be managed. I have not been treating it as a problem to be solved.
The problem to be solved was not: how do I reduce my engagement with him. The problem to be solved was: how do I resolve the reaching.
The only way to resolve the reaching was to reach him.
She set the case files in a neat stack on the left side of the desk. She opened her research notebook to a fresh page. She wrote at the top: *Revised framework.* She wrote:
*The condition is not the cost of loving him. The condition is the cost of loving him at a distance, through mediation, without resolution. Five cycles of correspondence have produced not resolution but accumulated orientation — forty years of reaching toward someone separated from me by the structure of the world we live in. The protocol was designed to reduce the reaching. The protocol cannot reduce the reaching because the reaching is constitutional. The protocol can only, at best, slow the deterioration rate, which it has done at the cost of five years of living as if the thing I was managing was a problem of exposure rather than a problem of structure.*
She paused.
Then she wrote: *The structural problem is the Tide. I cannot reach him because the Tide prevents it. The protocol is a response to an obstacle I cannot remove, and it is an inadequate response because the obstacle is the problem and removing the obstacle is the only solution. I have been managing the symptoms of an obstacle rather than addressing the obstacle. This is not wrong — it was the best available option given the constraints. It is also not sufficient, and it was never going to be sufficient, and I have known this for five years and have been running the protocol anyway because the alternative — addressing the obstacle — was not a thing I knew how to do.*
She looked at the storage room door, visible from where she sat.
She thought about the Zone. She thought about the stabilized corridor wall, the plaster formulation he had used from her own research. She thought about what the Zone was: a cross-section, a threshold, a place where the structure of the Tide was not functioning normally. She thought about what she was: a researcher who had spent fifteen years studying the mechanisms of temporal structure, who understood the physics of the Tide better than almost anyone alive, who had been living adjacent to a temporal anomaly for five active decades and had been treating it as a subject of investigation rather than a resource.
She thought: the Zone is where the Tide is not working correctly. The Zone is where the structure is wrong.
She thought: I have been studying how to document the structure. I have not been studying how to break it.
She went to the research cabinet and pulled the forbidden artifacts archive.
This was a section she had maintained since Cycle Two, when she had begun tracking the theoretical literature on temporal mechanics beyond the observational. The forbidden artifact literature was sparse and poorly sourced — the objects themselves were rare, their mechanisms poorly understood, their use strongly discouraged by every legitimate research framework she knew. She had maintained the archive out of professional completeness. She had not, until this moment, been reading it as a practical document.
She read it now.
She read it in the specific way she read things she needed to understand with full precision: slowly, with complete attention, not letting the implications of what she was reading interrupt the reading until she had finished the text itself. She read about the objects, their documented effects, the theoretical mechanism by which they were believed to operate. She read about the cost. The cost was documented across seventeen instances, none of them well-sourced, all of them consistent on the essential point: the cost was the structural integrity of the person who used it. You did not use a forbidden artifact without becoming, in some fundamental sense, no longer entirely what you had been.
She read the section on the Echoes.
An Echo was what you became if the structural integrity loss was total. A person who had used a forbidden artifact and sustained the full cost. Voids in the world, the literature called them — not quite present, not quite absent, moving through spaces without being fully in them, visible to their opposite-Phase counterpart in a way normal people were not. Deteriorating. The literature was consistent that Echoes deteriorated at a rate that made the absence-pathway timeline look generous. Weeks, not decades.
She read this.
She thought about seventeen centimeters and three to four decades.
She thought about Case Nine's two months. She thought about the mechanism: the reaching is more exhausting than the having. The cost of wanting something you cannot have may exceed the cost of having it. She thought about the fact that an Echo, by definition, was visible to the person they had been reaching toward. An Echo could be in the same room. An Echo could — the literature was ambiguous, but she had read enough to assemble a working hypothesis — potentially interact with the person who was their attachment object in real time, in the present tense, without the mediation of letters and objects and a decade of frozen time between them.
Weeks, not decades.
She sat with this trade.
She was a researcher. She knew how to evaluate evidence. She knew that seventeen centimeters at three centimeters per decade without protocol was terminal in four decades, and with protocol was terminal in approximately the same timeline because the protocol had not addressed the mechanism. She knew that Case Nine's reversal suggested that direct engagement with the attachment object could change the progression trajectory. She knew that becoming an Echo would change the timeline from four decades to weeks.
She also knew that four decades and weeks were not the same thing. She knew that choosing weeks was not a conservative choice. She knew that she was a person who had spent forty years making careful, protocol-driven, evidence-based choices, and that she was sitting in a house built by someone who had spent forty years making a different kind of choice, and that the outcome of both sets of choices was the same fracture on the same wrist.
She closed the forbidden artifact archive.
She did not put it back in the cabinet.
She set it on the desk next to the nine case files and the research notebook with its revised framework and the monitoring journals with seventeen cycles of her own documented reaching, and she looked at the collection of evidence she had assembled across forty years of studying a problem she had only recently admitted was her own problem, and she thought about the question she had written in the corridor on the first day of this new decade: *what kind of survival am I trying to have?*
She did not have an answer yet.
But she thought she knew which documents to read.
