She began with her name.
This was not arbitrary. She had been thinking, for three weeks since reading the forbidden artifact archive with revised attention, about what it meant to be present in a space — what constituted presence, what could be taken away and what could not, what would remain if she removed everything she was able to remove. The name was the most direct form of presence: identification, the specific claim of a person on a space. She had left her name in various locations throughout the house across forty years of occupation, in the casual way people left evidence of themselves in spaces they inhabited — inscriptions, labels, annotations, the small marks of ownership that accumulated without decision. She was going to remove them.
She had a list. She had made it over two days, moving through the house with the systematic attention she brought to site documentation, noting every location where her name or her initials or her handwriting appeared in a permanent or semi-permanent form. The list was longer than she had expected. Forty years of occupying a space produced a surprisingly complete record of a person's presence, if you were looking for it. She had filled three pages of a small notebook.
She started in the study.
The first item on the list was the inscription on the inside cover of the archive volume she had been building since Cycle Two: *I. [initial], Cycle 2, Year 3.* She had written it in ink. She worked at it carefully with a fine abrasive instrument and then, where the removal left a ghost of the original, treated the paper with a solution that brought the texture back toward its original state. The result was not perfect — a person who knew what to look for might see the absence — but it was as complete as she could make it. She moved on.
The windowsill in the east room held an inscription she had made in Cycle Two, Year Six, on a morning when she had been working in the east room and had been moved, for reasons she had not examined closely at the time, to mark the moment. *I. — here, Year 6.* She had used a small knife, not deeply, just into the surface of the paint. She worked at it for forty minutes. The inscription was eventually gone, the paint surface smoothed and retouched with the matching paint she had kept in the supply cabinet since Cycle Three for exactly this kind of maintenance. She moved on.
The kitchen held more than she had expected. She had a habit, which she had not been aware of as a habit until she was inventorying it for removal, of labeling things. Shelf contents. Container dates. The organization system she had implemented in the kitchen in Cycle Three, the labels she had applied to the lower cabinets to explain the system to anyone using the kitchen who was not familiar with it — which, in the context of this house, meant him. The labels were in her handwriting. She removed them and replaced them with the system itself: reorganizing the cabinets to be legible without labels, the way a well-designed building was legible without signage.
She worked through the morning and into the afternoon without stopping.
The library had the most. Forty years of inhabiting a library produced a density of marginalia, bookmarks, inserted notes, annotations in the margins of volumes she had shelved and retrieved across multiple cycles. She could not remove these without damaging the books, most of which were not hers to damage. She removed what she could — the loose papers, the bookmarks, the notes she had inserted that were not physically attached — and she left the marginalia. She noted this in the small inventory notebook as: *library: partial. marginalia cannot be removed without damage to non-owned materials. Acceptable incompleteness.*
She said this aloud: *acceptable incompleteness.* She was talking as she worked, had been talking since the first hour of the morning, which was the physical tell she recognized without being able to stop. She was narrating the process in the voice she used for research annotation, the voice that was clinical and precise and that served as a kind of continuous externalization of the part of her that needed to be doing something with words while the rest of her was doing something with her hands. She had been talking to herself for forty years. She had never minded it before. Today she minded it, slightly, because the voice she was using was the voice that meant she was afraid of something and was handling the fear through vocabulary, and she was aware of this and could not stop it.
The corridor held three items she had not put there. They were items he had put there — the coat rack with the two hooks now actually carrying coats, the small shelf he had added in Cycle Three that held a collection of objects she had placed on it across subsequent cycles without thinking about the fact that she was placing her objects on a shelf he had added. She removed her objects from the shelf. She left the shelf.
She could not take the shelf. She had not built the shelf.
This was the problem she had encountered in every room and which the inventory had warned her she would encounter and which she had understood theoretically before beginning and which was, in practice, more difficult than she had anticipated. She could remove what she had put in the house. She could not remove what he had built into it in response to her. The shelf was a response to her — she knew this, could identify the letter in Year Three of Cycle Three in which she had mentioned, while discussing something else, that the corridor needed a surface. He had built the surface. The surface was now part of the corridor. She had put objects on it and removed the objects but the surface was still there, and the surface was her, in the specific way that all the surfaces of this house were her: built around her presence, calibrated to her habits, the permanent record of someone else's sustained attention.
She moved on.
By late afternoon she had completed every room on the list. She had removed approximately sixty percent of the items that constituted her material presence in the house. The remaining forty percent was the portion that was not removable without damage to the house itself or to materials she did not own — the shelf heights, the acoustic treatment, the glazing, the lamp positions, the specific plaster formulation in the corridor wall, the entire accumulated architecture of his attention.
She stood in the study and looked at what she had done.
The study was slightly different from how it had been this morning. Not dramatically. If you had not known where to look, you would not have found the change. But she knew where to look, and looking, she could see the absences: the inscription gone from the archive cover, the label gone from the cabinet, the note gone from between the pages of the survey volume. The small specific marks of a person's extended presence in a space, removed.
The house was still full of her.
She had understood this before she began, and understanding it had not prepared her for the experience of completing the task and finding it true. Every room she had moved through was still her — was still the shape of her presence organized into walls and surfaces and angles, the accumulated responses of someone who had been paying attention to her for forty years. The inscriptions had been her name. The house was her existence. The difference between those two things was the difference between a signature and a person, and removing the signature had not touched the person in any way the house could perceive.
She went to the desk.
The forbidden artifact archive was on the desk where she had left it three weeks ago. She had been reading it periodically since then, not with the urgent sustained attention of the initial reading but in the way she read things she needed to think about more slowly — returning to specific sections, sitting with the implications, building her understanding of the mechanism and the cost in the gradual way she built understanding of things that mattered. She had been building it in parallel with the erasure project, the two processes running simultaneously in a way she recognized as characteristic: she thought with her hands as well as her mind, and the physical work of the erasure had been helping her think through the theoretical problem of the archive.
She had arrived at a clarity she had not had when she first read the literature.
The cost was documented. The mechanism was documented. The timeline was different from the timeline she was currently on but the direction of both timelines was the same, and the Case Nine reversal mechanism suggested that the direction of the timeline could be changed by a variable she had not been able to test. She had not been able to test it because she had never been in the same room with him. She had forty years of evidence for what absence cost. She had two months of Case Nine's data for what presence might do differently.
She sat at the desk.
She looked at the drawer on the left side — the drawer with his letters and the unsent letter she had written him and the letter she was working on the version of to send. She did not open the drawer. She looked at it for a while.
She thought about what she had just done: forty years of her name removed from the surfaces of the house, every inscription and label and casual mark of extended occupancy cleared. She thought about why she had done it. She had done it because her research indicated that absence-pathway deterioration was driven by the cellular orientation of the subject, and she had theorized that if she could reduce the density of her material presence in the house — reduce the evidence of her, the things he returned to and engaged with and that maintained his cellular orientation toward her — she might reduce the cost on his side. She had been treating her side of the equation for five years. She had been trying, in this final act, to treat his side.
She thought about this.
She thought about Case Nine. She thought about the researcher whose counterpart had stopped writing. She thought about the nine case files and the characteristic shape of all nine trajectories. She thought about what all nine had in common, which she had identified: in none of the nine cases had the subject had direct, sustained, resolving contact with the person who was the object of the attachment.
She had been trying to save him from her by removing herself from his field of perception. She had been trying to reduce his cost by making herself less present in the spaces he returned to. She had been doing this for five years, and she had seventeen centimeters and a progression rate that exceeded her case file maximum, and she had spent the afternoon removing her name from the surfaces of a house that was still her in every structural dimension, and she was sitting at a desk with the forbidden artifact archive in front of her and a drawer full of letters she had written and not sent and a question she had been asking in various forms for forty years: *what kind of survival am I trying to have?*
She thought she knew the answer.
She had known it for several weeks and had been working through the erasure project as the last act of the approach that the answer made obsolete. The erasure was the final implementation of the protocol that she now understood was designed to address the wrong problem. She had known this when she began the erasure. She had done it anyway, because the thing you had been doing for forty years required a more complete ending than just stopping.
She had ended it. She had removed her name from the surfaces. The protocol was over.
She put her hand on the archive.
She looked at the window. Outside, the garden was in the low light of late afternoon — the south corner tree in its full summer weight, the bench beneath it casting a long shadow eastward, the stone path he had relaid in Cycle Four running from the house to the garden's far edge. She had looked at this garden across five active decades. She had walked in it, had sat on the bench under the tree, had noticed the specific quality of the light through the leaves at different hours and in different seasons. She had mentioned this light in a letter from Cycle Three. He had written back about it from his side — the light through those same leaves in his decade, which was different because the tree had been younger and less full. He had written: *the light in the garden changes between cycles. I don't know yet what it will look like when the tree is full.*
She knew what it looked like when the tree was full.
She thought: he does not, yet. He will not know until his next active decade. He will wake and go to the garden and see the tree at full size and the light through its full leaves, and the light will be what I described in Year Three of Cycle Three, and he will be in the experience of what I told him was coming, and I will be suspended.
She thought: or I will not be suspended. Or I will be something other than suspended. Or the structure of when I am present and when he is present will be different from what it has been.
She thought: this is what I am considering. This is what the archive is about.
She opened the drawer.
She did not read the letters. She did not read the one she had written to him or the ones he had written to her. She looked at them for a moment — the organized sleeves, the chronological arrangement she had maintained since Year Four of Cycle Two — and then she looked at the letter she had written and not sent, and she thought about what it contained, and she thought about the version she had told him she was working on.
She thought: the version I can leave is not a letter. The version I can leave is a choice about whether to leave at all.
She closed the drawer.
She stayed at the desk until the light was gone from the garden and the house settled into its evening sounds, and she did not open the archive again that night, and she did not make a decision, and she sat in the study that still held her in every surface it had ever been calibrated to and thought about the question of what kind of survival she was trying to have, and did not answer it, and found that not answering it was also, in its way, a kind of answer.
The south corner tree stood in the last of the light.
The drawer was closed.
The archive was on the desk.
