Morgana arrived at the safehouse to find Aiden already there, surrounded by scattered printouts and the particular stillness of someone who had been sitting with difficult news for several hours before finally having to speak it aloud to another person. He looked up as she entered, and something in his expression — a tightness around the eyes, a paleness that hadn't been there the last time she'd seen him — told her immediately that whatever he'd found had cost him more than the satisfaction of a solved puzzle. The tea he'd apparently made hours earlier sat untouched and cold at his elbow, a small detail that told her more than his expression alone about how thoroughly the discovery had consumed his attention since sending his message.
"You found the name." she said, settling into the chair across from him, setting her own bag down more carefully than usual, sensing the gravity in the room before he'd said another word.
"Marcus Aldric Voss." Aiden said, sliding a printout across the table. "Former Deputy Director of the Ancient Bank. Officially retired ten years ago. Unofficially, apparently, still active enough to authorize whatever this Continuity Initiative actually is."
Morgana studied the printout — a formal Bank photograph of an older elven man with sharp, calculating eyes and the kind of composed bearing that suggested decades of wielding quiet institutional power. "You know this name."
"I knew this man." Aiden corrected, his voice carrying a weight she hadn't heard from him before, something rawer than his usual careful composure. "He was my direct supervisor for my first two years at the Bank. He mentored me. Taught me most of what I know about credit structuring, about reading the fine print other people missed. I respected him more than almost anyone else in that building, back when I still believed the Bank's rules existed for reasons that made sense."
"And now you're finding out he might be the architect of everything you've spent years trying to expose." Morgana said quietly, understanding immediately the particular betrayal embedded in that discovery.
"I keep thinking about specific things he told me." Aiden said, staring at the printout as though it might rearrange itself into something less damning if he looked long enough. "Lessons I took as wisdom at the time. He told me once that mercy applied unevenly was crueler than none at all — that the kindest thing an officer could do was follow procedure exactly, without exception. I believed that for longer than I'd like to admit. It took years of watching what that procedure actually cost people before I understood how convenient a philosophy it was for someone sitting comfortably above the consequences of it." He paused, jaw tightening. "I used that same logic on Marcus Ferren, the night we met. Told myself I was being fair by following the rules exactly, no more, no less. I learned that logic from him."
Morgana reached across the table, her hand covering his where it rested against the printout, a gesture more instinctive than considered. "You were young. People we respect shape us before we have the tools to question them properly. That's not a failure on your part. And for what it's worth, you didn't stay that person. You're sitting here now trying to undo exactly the kind of harm he taught you to accept."
Aiden looked at her hand covering his, something in his expression softening slightly at the contact. "I appreciate you saying that. It doesn't entirely make the discovery easier to sit with."
"There's something else." Morgana said, withdrawing her hand to pull out her own notes, the momentary tenderness giving way to the sharper focus of new information. "This name — Voss — I've seen it before too. Not in Bank records. In old diplomatic correspondence from the palace archives, from years before I left. He negotiated several trade agreements between the Bank and the elven court, back when my mother was still building the alliance structures the kingdom still relies on today."
Aiden's brow furrowed. "The Bank conspiracy and the political situation with your throne — connected through the same person?"
"It's not conclusive." Morgana admitted. "But it's more than coincidence should allow. Voss had access to both worlds — Bank leadership and royal diplomatic channels. If he's been running something like the Continuity Initiative for over a decade, he's had ample opportunity to build connections deep into court politics as well."
"Which might explain why he 'retired' so quietly." Aiden said, thinking aloud. "Not a fall from grace. A strategic withdrawal from visibility, so he could operate from the shadows without official scrutiny."
They spent the next hour cross-referencing everything they could find on Voss's decade-old disappearance from public Bank life, piecing together a picture of a man who had systematically erased himself from official visibility while apparently maintaining, and perhaps expanding, whatever influence he'd built during his years of open power. Property records showed nothing current. Financial trails went cold within months of his official retirement. Even correspondence records, normally meticulously archived by Bank protocol, showed suspicious gaps precisely around the dates of his departure. Aiden pulled three separate archive systems, each search turning up the same frustrating pattern of a man who had known exactly which records to scrub and which to leave conspicuously ordinary, avoiding the kind of total absence that might itself raise flags.
"Someone helped him disappear this thoroughly." Morgana observed. "This isn't just one man being careful. This is institutional-level cover, someone with authority to make records vanish without triggering the usual audit flags."
"Which brings us back to the Continuity Initiative itself." Aiden said. "Not just a scheme Voss runs. An entire apparatus built to protect him, and whatever he's actually doing, from anyone who might come looking."
Morgana sat back, absorbing the scope of what they were describing — not a single corrupt official skimming profits, but an entrenched, protected operation spanning at least a decade, reaching into both the Bank's highest levels and, potentially, the political machinery of her own former kingdom. "We need to find him directly. Whatever he's protecting, whatever he's building toward, we won't understand it fully until we can ask him ourselves."
"That won't be easy." Aiden said. "A man this careful about erasing his own trail isn't going to have a current address sitting in any database I can access."
"There's one lead." Morgana said, pulling out a final document from her notes. "The last confirmed address associated with Voss, right before his records went cold. It's not current, obviously, but it might be a starting point — someone who knew him then might know where he went, or at least point us toward someone who does."
Aiden took the document, scanning the address with a frown of recognition. "This is in the Ashfall District. Abandoned for years, since the Bank pulled its investment out after some kind of magical contamination incident. Nobody's lived there in over a decade."
"Then it's either a dead end." Morgana said, "or it's exactly the kind of forgotten place someone like Voss would choose specifically because everyone else has stopped looking there."
Aiden considered that, something settling into grim resolve behind his eyes. "We should check it. Even if it's a long shot, it's the only physical lead we have."
"Tomorrow night." Morgana said. "Give us time to prepare properly. If Voss really is behind something this large, we shouldn't walk in without knowing what we might be facing."
Aiden nodded, gathering the scattered documents into some semblance of order, though Morgana could see the toll the day's discovery had taken on him, the particular exhaustion of watching a formative piece of one's own history rearrange itself into something far darker than originally understood. "Thank you." he said quietly, after a moment. "For not treating this like it was just another piece of evidence. For understanding that it's more complicated than that, for me."
"I know something about complicated relationships with people who shaped who we became." Morgana said, a small, wry smile touching her lips. "I think that's becoming something we have in common, in more ways than either of us probably expected when we met at Copperline."
Aiden almost smiled at that, the ghost of humor breaking briefly through the weight of the day's revelation. "Enemies to reluctant partners to apparently sharing complicated family and mentor trauma. Quite a trajectory."
"We contain multitudes." Morgana replied, and for a moment, despite everything they'd just uncovered, despite the address in Ashfall District waiting for tomorrow night's investigation, despite the seven days still ticking down on her own impossible decision, there was simply this — two people finding a little bit of unexpected lightness together in the middle of a conspiracy that kept growing larger and darker with every thread they pulled.
