The Ashfall District had been abandoned for over a decade, ever since a magical contamination incident had rendered the entire block uninhabitable, and walking through its silent, crumbling streets felt to Morgana like stepping into a photograph of a place rather than the place itself — buildings frozen mid-decay, their facades stained with the faint residual shimmer of whatever magical accident had driven everyone away. The silence pressed in around them, broken only by the occasional creak of settling debris or the distant call of some nocturnal bird that had claimed the ruins as its own territory. Aiden moved beside her with his weapon drawn, the Assessor's Lens active, scanning for any lingering traces of the contamination that might still pose a threat despite the years that had passed.
"Hard to believe anyone would choose to hide here voluntarily." Morgana murmured, picking her way around a collapsed section of pavement. "Unless that's exactly the point."
"Nobody looks for anything valuable in a place everyone assumes is empty and dangerous." Aiden agreed. "Which makes it either the smartest hiding place in the city, or exactly the kind of overconfidence that eventually gets someone caught."
"This is the address." Morgana said, stopping before a three-story building that had partially collapsed on one side, its windows long since shattered, ivy and hardier weeds growing through cracks in the foundation. "Or what's left of it."
"Wait." Aiden said, holding up a hand. "There are fresh footprints here, in the dust. And this—" he gestured toward a section of debris near the entrance that looked deliberately arranged rather than naturally fallen, "—this has been moved recently. Someone's been coming and going."
They approached carefully, Morgana's instincts for physical infiltration guiding them through the safest path across the unstable rubble, until they found it — a section of collapsed flooring that, on closer inspection, revealed a hidden hatch beneath layers of carefully placed debris, disguised well enough that a cursory search would have missed it entirely.
"Clever." Morgana murmured, working the hatch open with practiced hands. "Hidden in plain sight, inside a building everyone already assumes is empty."
The hatch led down into a narrow stairwell, descending into a hidden basement level that showed none of the decay visible above — clean, dry, and clearly maintained, a stark contrast to the ruin surrounding it. Aiden's Lens picked up traces of protective wards lining the walls, subtle enough to avoid detection by anyone not specifically looking for them.
"Someone's definitely still using this space." Aiden said quietly, moving further into the room, where a desk covered in documents and a small archive of data crystals suggested an active workspace rather than an abandoned hideout.
Morgana moved to the desk, scanning the documents quickly. "These are recent. Financial records, correspondence — this is Voss's operation, still running, right under everyone's noses in a district no one bothers to check."
As Aiden reached for one of the data crystals to examine it more closely, a soft click sounded from beneath the desk, and the room's protective wards flared to sudden, violent life, the walls themselves beginning to shift, closing inward with a low, grinding groan of ancient stonework reactivating after years of dormancy. Dust rained down from the ceiling in fine streams, catching the dim emergency light in a way that made the whole chamber feel, for a moment, like it was filling with something denser than air.
"Trap!" Morgana shouted, grabbing Aiden's arm and pulling him back from the desk as the walls continued their slow, inexorable advance, the ceiling beginning to lower in tandem, the entire chamber constricting like a slowly closing fist.
"The hatch!" Aiden said, turning back toward the stairwell, only to find it already sealed by a section of wall that had slid into place, cutting off their most obvious escape route.
Morgana's mind raced, cataloging everything she knew about ancient ward structures, the kind of knowledge she'd absorbed as a child in the royal library without ever expecting to need it for her own survival. "This is an old containment ward. Elven design, older than anything the Bank typically uses. There should be a counter-glyph somewhere, a release mechanism built into the original structure for emergency deactivation." She could almost hear her old tutor's voice, dry and exacting, walking her through the theory of containment wards on some long-forgotten afternoon she'd spent wishing she were anywhere else.
"We don't have time to search the whole room!" Aiden said, his voice tight with controlled urgency as the ceiling dropped another visible increment, the air in the chamber growing noticeably more compressed, forcing him to hunch slightly where he stood.
"I know." Morgana said, closing her eyes for a moment, forcing herself to remember — old lessons from a tutor who'd once made her memorize ward structures for hours she'd resented at the time, certain she'd never need such impractical knowledge in whatever life she eventually chose. "These wards always key to the founder's bloodline or a specific counter-phrase. Voss would have needed something simple enough to remember under pressure, but obscure enough that an intruder wouldn't guess it."
Her eyes snapped open, fixing on a small, easily overlooked symbol etched into the underside of the desk — the same personal signature mark they'd found on the Continuity Initiative documents. "There. That's not just his authorization mark. It's the ward's key."
She lunged for the desk, tracing the symbol with her fingers while speaking the ancient counter-phrase her tutor had drilled into her years ago, the words feeling strange and half-forgotten on her tongue after so long unused. For one terrifying moment, nothing happened, the walls continuing their relentless advance, close enough now that Aiden had to duck to avoid the lowering ceiling.
Then, with a groan of protest, the ward structure shuddered and stilled, the walls freezing in place mere feet from where they stood, the oppressive pressure in the air releasing all at once as the ancient magic powered down.
Both of them stood frozen for a moment, breathing hard, the adrenaline of the near-miss still surging through their systems. Then, almost simultaneously, they moved toward each other, and Morgana found herself pulled into a tight embrace, Aiden's arms wrapping around her with a fierceness that spoke of exactly how close they'd both come to a very different outcome.
"We're all right." he said, his voice muffled against her hair, more to reassure himself than to inform her. "We're all right."
"We're all right." she repeated, her own arms tightening around him in return, the two of them standing together in the newly-stilled chamber for a moment longer than either strictly needed, neither quite ready to release the other yet.
Eventually, they separated, both slightly self-conscious about the intensity of the reaction, though neither commented on it directly. Morgana turned her attention back to the desk, gathering the documents and data crystals with hands that weren't quite as steady as she would have liked.
"There's a name here." she said, flipping through one final document. "Someone still active in the city, receiving regular reports from this location. Someone Voss trusts enough to keep informed of whatever this operation is actually building toward."
Aiden leaned over to look, his expression darkening further as he read the name. "We need to get this back to the safehouse. Now."
They made their way out through the hidden hatch, now safely deactivated, emerging back into the ruined streets of Ashfall District with the weight of new evidence and the lingering, unspoken awareness of just how close they'd come, in that collapsing chamber, to never making it out at all. The night air felt sharper than before, cleaner somehow after the close, dust-choked confines of the hidden basement, and both of them walked in silence for several minutes, the adrenaline slowly ebbing from their systems as the abandoned district gave way, gradually, to streets that still held the ordinary rhythms of life.
"That name." Aiden said finally, breaking the silence as they approached the spot where they'd left the flying car. "Whoever it is, they're operating right under the Bank's nose. Someone who probably still works there, still reports to Voss without anyone else knowing."
"Someone we'll need to identify carefully." Morgana agreed. "After tonight, I don't think either of us wants to walk into another trap without knowing exactly who else might be watching."
Aiden nodded, opening the car door for her with a small, automatic courtesy that felt, after everything they'd just survived together, more significant than the simple gesture probably warranted. Whatever waited for them next, the discovery in Ashfall District had made one thing unmistakably clear: Voss's operation ran deeper and wider than either of them had initially suspected, and time was becoming a resource they could no longer afford to spend carelessly.
