The sabbatical approval came on a Wednesday, and it was not what she had expected.
She had expected a simple yes or no. What arrived was a conditional yes: the sabbatical was approved, pending completion of the remaining semester's teaching obligations and administrative duties. She could begin the sabbatical year the following February. Which meant: September through January in the east, in person. Five months. Then return.
She read the email three times.
She had known the possibility of a semester requirement -- her advisor had mentioned it as a standard condition for first sabbaticals at her institution. She had not known it would be confirmed this quickly, this specifically. Five months was not four. Five months beginning in September was the summer in Alderheath, the autumn, the beginning of winter -- the seasons she had not yet seen here.
She set the phone down and looked at the guesthouse desk. The extension outline was open. The acknowledgments section was visible. She looked at it for a moment.
Five months. Seventeen or eighteen cycles, depending on whether the pattern held. She would miss approximately eighteen weeks of Corin's weekly transitions, which was not an abstract figure -- it was Cycle 90 through Cycle 107, give or take. Eighteen specific weeks of his specific life that she would not be present for.
She closed the extension outline.
She picked up the phone and looked at the sabbatical approval email again. The return date was February of next year. The sabbatical would run for twelve months after that -- through the following spring, summer, autumn, winter. More than a year total, if she returned to Alderheath for the sabbatical period.
She thought about what she would need to tell him.
She had not told him about the semester requirement yet. She had been processing it first -- the same practice she had used throughout the time here: arriving at her own position before putting it on the table, so that what she said would be her position rather than an anxiety looking for collaboration.
She had her position now.
She was going to do the semester. She was going to return. She had already known this; the email had confirmed what the knowing already was. What she needed to figure out was how to say it in a way that was honest about both things: that she was leaving and that she was coming back.
She sat with this for a while.
Then she put on her coat and walked to the mine road.
---
She had been to the mine road many times with Corin and once at sunrise with him. She had been there once alone, in the early months, in the rain, doing field work. She had not been since then. She went now because she needed to think about something significant and the mine road was where significant things in Alderheath got thought about.
The May morning on the road was different from the autumn morning of her first visit. The valley was fully green now, the ridge carrying its summer color all the way to the upper slopes, the wildflowers she had not noticed in October visible now at the road's edges. She walked north at a moderate pace, not field work pace, just walking pace, and let the road be the road.
She thought about five months.
She thought: the work here will be on hold during the semester. The extension paper would be submitted before she left -- she could finish it in the time remaining. The university consultancy questions and the Ada Veskin interview material would be documented. She would leave in September with the extension finished and the Eighth Guild documented and Ada's oral tradition in the record.
She would leave Corin with approximately eighteen cycles remaining until she returned.
She thought about what eighteen cycles looked like from inside his experience. She thought about what she had read in the portions of the Ledger she had seen, about the specific quality of the THINGS THAT WERE STILL MINE list and the six items on it. She thought about what it meant that she was one of the items on that list and was going to be absent for five months.
She thought: the item on the list doesn't require physical presence to be on the list. The list is for the things that are genuinely and persistently his. She had not stopped being on the list when she went to her guesthouse at night. She would not stop being on it in September.
She stopped at the first Grey Ferrite exposure. She stood with her palm against the stone the way she had seen Corin do -- not to read it, she had no competence for reading it, but to be in contact with the material that was the cause of all of this. The stone was cold and slightly rough, the reddish ore vein visible in the grey when the light caught it. She held her hand there for a moment.
She thought: this stone changed him. And he changed how I understand research and identity and the difference between knowing and being. And I changed how he thinks about what persists. And both of us changed what the reading room is.
All of that persisted in the stone and in the people and in the records and in the extended paper and in the lists of things that were still theirs. None of it required her continuous presence to persist.
She took her hand off the stone.
She walked back down the mine road toward Alderheath in the May morning. The town was below her, visible from this part of the road in the gap between the valley slopes -- the rooftops and the archive steeple and the Verran glinting through the buildings. She thought: I have looked at this view from the inside and from the outside, from below and from above. I have seen Alderheath from every angle you can see a place from.
I know this place. I will come back to this place.
She arrived at the archive at eleven and went upstairs to the reading room. Corin was at his end of the table, the bookbinding week in its fourth day, the journal collection assessment continuing.
She sat down. She looked at the extension outline. She looked at him.
"The sabbatical," she said. "It's been confirmed. There's a condition."
He set down his pen.
She told him: the semester, the timeline, the five months in the east before the sabbatical year began. She said it plainly, with the specific economy of someone who had arrived at their own position and was presenting it clearly: this is what is required, this is what I have decided, this is the timeline.
He listened. He was quiet for a moment after she finished.
"September," he said.
"September," she confirmed.
"And February."
"February."
He looked at the assessment materials in front of him. Then at her. "Five months is manageable," he said. "For both of us."
"Yes," she said. "I think so too."
"The extension will be done before September."
"Yes. I have six weeks, possibly eight. Enough."
He picked up his pen. He made a notation in the assessment notes. He set the pen down again. "I want you to know," he said, looking at the notation rather than at her, "that the five months doesn't change the six items on the list."
She held his gaze when he looked up.
"I know," she said. "That's why I'm telling you directly instead of through Tessa's scheduling."
Something in his expression shifted -- the near-expression, the almost-smile that she had been learning for nine months and which she had not yet catalogued into a single name because it was more than one thing at once. He returned to the assessment notes.
"We should go to the market more Saturdays before September," he said. "To use the time."
She looked at the extension outline. "Yes," she said. "I agree completely."
She picked up her pen and returned to the outline and the May morning was the May morning and the reading room was the reading room and she was staying for now and leaving in September and coming back in February and all of those things were true simultaneously, as the truest things usually were.
She spent the afternoon after telling him thinking about what she had not said.
She had told him the facts: the semester, September, February, the five months. She had not told him what she had thought about on the mine road: the Grey Ferrite against her palm, the view of Alderheath from the road above, the specific understanding she had arrived at about what persisted when physical presence ended.
She had not said this because it would have been too much. The facts were what the situation required. The understanding was hers to carry, and she would carry it.
She thought about what five months would look like in practice. She would be in her university city, in her office, teaching her graduate seminar and finishing her administrative obligations. She would have her usual collegial relationships and her usual professional routines. She would also have, running underneath all of it, the awareness that the reading room in Alderheath existed and that Corin was in it.
This was a different thing from how she had experienced separation from things that mattered before. She had always been mobile -- had moved between research sites, had not put down roots in a way that created the specific weight of absence. Now there was a weight. She noted this as significant. It was the weight of belonging somewhere, which was different from the weight of leaving somewhere you had enjoyed.
She wrote in the personal journal: *Five months is manageable. I have managed harder things. The specific quality of manageability in this case is: I know where I'm going when it's over. I have a place to come back to. That changes what the leaving feels like.*
She paused. She wrote: *The leaving feels like going away rather than losing. That's new.*
She put the journal away. She opened the extension outline and worked until seven. Then she went out and walked to the market before it closed for the evening and bought bread and vegetables and the good garlic from two sections over and went home and made dinner, slowly, thinking about nothing in particular, and ate at the windowsill and watched the Alderheath evening do what evenings in Alderheath did in May: the late light, the last birds, the specific quality of an evening that was warm enough to keep the window open a crack and let the air in.
She thought: I am going to miss this.
She thought: I am going to come back to this.
Both statements were true, one after the other, and neither cancelled the other.
---
He wrote in the Ledger on Wednesday night.
Bookbinding week, Day 4. Clinical entry: competence holding at peak, paper and thread reading clearly, the journal assessment proceeding at the expected rate. He would finish the full collection assessment by Friday.
In the small writing: *Mira told me today. The sabbatical is conditional: one semester in person, September through January. Five months. Then she comes back.*
He read what he had written. He continued:
*She told me directly, as she always tells me directly. She had her position already formed when she said it -- she had processed the news and arrived at her decision before she put it on the table. This is the specific quality of her honesty that I've been receiving for nine months: she says the thing clearly, without performing the uncertainty she may or may not have already resolved.*
He looked at the Ledger. He wrote:
*Five months. I am calculating approximately eighteen cycles. I have been in eighty-nine cycles -- adding eighteen to that is a significant proportion. But the calculation is wrong-headed. It's not the proportion that matters. What matters is: she is coming back.*
He paused. He wrote: *She is in the sixth position on the THINGS THAT WERE STILL MINE list. Absence does not remove items from that list. The workshop was mine while I was not in it. The north window was mine when I was looking at other things. The quality of persisting is not dependent on proximity.*
He read this. He wrote below it:
*She said: five months is manageable. I said: the five months doesn't change the six items. I meant this in the same way that I mean everything I say to her: literally. The sixth item does not require her to be in the next room. The sixth item is a fact about what is mine, not a report on location.*
He closed the Ledger. He made the workshop's late coffee -- the too-dark coffee, which he always made and which no one else had ever drunk with him until this year.
He thought about September and about what eighteen cycles looked like from inside his own experience. He thought about Cycle 40, the one he had shown her, the entry that read: *the list is shorter than I want it to be.* He thought about the difference between that entry and the current state of the list.
The list was not shorter than he wanted it to be. The list had what it had. The fifth item was direction and the sixth item was her name and both of them had been earned through the specific quality of what the past nine months had produced.
He thought: four months in the east and then back. He thought: I have managed this building, these materials, this archive, this ridge, alone for two years. I can manage five months.
He also thought: I am not going to waste the four months between now and September. He was going to use them correctly. The market on Saturday mornings. The Friday evenings. The late archive sessions and the reading room's working days. He was going to be fully present in all of it.
He turned off the lamp. He went upstairs. The May night was warm enough that the workshop window let in the specific sound of the valley in warm weather -- the river louder, the birdsong earlier in the morning, the particular quality of a place that was alive in a way that winter made quiet.
He thought about what she had said on the mine road: *I have been looking at that mineral for nine months and I hadn't seen that.*
He thought: I showed her the right light and she saw the right thing. He thought: this is what it means to look at something together.
He would keep that, even in her absence. The specific knowing of what she had seen in that light, from that angle, at that time of morning. He would have that for as long as he had the mineral week's competence, and for as long after that as retained skills persisted.
He would have it for a long time.
Thursday morning. The archive. Two mugs on the reading room table.
She came in at nine and sat down and looked at the extension outline, which was on the third section of the manuscript now -- the Ada Veskin testimony section, which was the hardest section because it required the specific balance of honoring the oral tradition's language while fitting it into the academic register. She was finding the balance, slowly, by writing the Ada quotes first and building the analysis around them rather than the other way.
He came in from the cataloguing room where he had been starting the morning's journal assessment. He sat down. He looked at the table with the specific quality of look she had learned to read: not the observer's look or the researcher's look, the ordinary look of someone who is in the room he belongs to, doing the work he does.
"The Ada section," she said. "I'm using her words as anchors."
"Yes," he said. "That's right."
"She said: the room is for all of you. Not one guild. All of them." She looked at the outline. "I'm building the section around that sentence. Everything else is context for it."
He thought about this. "The historical members' own understanding as the interpretive frame," he said. "Rather than an externally imposed category."
"Yes." She looked at the notes. "The paper began as a mechanism study. It's ending as a study of how people understand themselves when the mechanism they live with doesn't have a name."
He was quiet for a moment. "That's a better paper."
"Yes," she said. "I think it is." She looked at him. "I couldn't have written it alone."
"I know," he said. Not as modesty -- as fact.
She looked at the extension outline. The acknowledgments page was at the back of the draft, waiting for its final revision. She thought about the sentence she had added: *whose generosity in sharing their life, their time, and their particular quality of attention made possible an understanding of the subject matter that no amount of archive hours could have produced alone.* She had changed *their life* from *a life* -- plural now, because it was not only Corin but Ada as well, the two people who had given her access to what was inside the experience rather than outside it.
She thought: the paper is dedicated to no one, because dedications were not standard in this kind of academic work. But if it could be: to the people who helped me understand what I was looking at.
She opened the outline and went to the Ada section and began writing.
The reading room was the reading room. The work was the work. September was four months away and February after that and the extension would be finished in six weeks and the summer was coming, and both of them were in the room, and the room knew what it was.
