The second Rosch email arrived on a Friday afternoon, three weeks after the in-person visit.
Corin read it at the workshop desk, the current cycle's assessment materials spread in front of him, the working day technically over but his attention still organized around the week's task. The email was brief: the most recent cycle had measured at 158 hours, down from 161. Two standard deviations below the pre-visit baseline. Rosch was upgrading the monitoring recommendation from monthly to biweekly. He wanted a phone conversation the following Tuesday.
Corin read the email twice. He set the phone face-down on the desk.
158 hours. The shortening was accelerating.
He had known this might happen. Rosch had said at the in-person visit that the direction was worth monitoring. Two standard deviations was not alarming by itself -- variation within a system could produce outliers that then corrected. But the pattern was now three data points rather than one: 163, 161, 158. Three consecutive shortened cycles, each one shorter than the last.
He picked up the Ledger and turned to the current week's entry.
He wrote the clinical data for the day: Cycle 91, Day 6. Competence holding in a geological assessment week, appropriate to Day 6 which was the beginning of the decline from peak. He wrote this and then held the pen above the page for a moment.
He had not told Mira about the second email. She knew about the first data point -- Rosch had told them both at the in-person visit. She did not know about the subsequent two, because Rosch had sent those results to him directly and he had not yet shared them.
He had not been deciding not to tell her. He had been processing the information, which was what he always did with significant information before presenting it: arriving at his own understanding of it, finding the accurate words, determining what it meant in the context of what was already known.
He was not yet sure what it meant.
He wrote in the small writing: *Second Rosch email. 158 hours. Three consecutive shortening cycles. I have not told Mira yet. I am processing what this means before I put it on the table. This is the same practice I have always used and which she uses herself.*
He read this. He added: *The difference is that this is the kind of information that affects her as well as me. She is going to want to know. I will tell her when I have something accurate to say beyond the raw data.*
He closed the Ledger.
He looked at the north window. Halvern Ridge in the June evening, the mountain in its summer coat now, the snow entirely retreated to the highest elevations, the specific quality of the ridge in summer different from all other seasons -- solid, green, the permanence of it more apparent rather than less. He had been looking at this ridge for two years and knew its seasonal changes and knew that summer came and that autumn followed and that winter followed autumn, and he had been through all of them, and he was still here.
He was still here. The cycles were changing. He would see what Rosch said on Tuesday.

She had not yet told him about the specific language in the sabbatical approval.
The approval had been sent two weeks ago and she had told him the substance of it -- the semester requirement, September through January, the return date -- but she had not told him what the approval letter said about the conditions for the sabbatical to remain valid.
The conditions were: satisfactory completion of the semester, maintenance of active research productivity during the sabbatical year, and formal submission of the extension paper to a peer-reviewed journal before the sabbatical began.
The third condition was the one she had not mentioned. It was not a problem -- she had always intended to submit the extension before leaving. But the formal condition gave the submission a different quality: it was no longer a plan, it was an obligation. And the obligation meant that the extension paper needed to be finalized in the next two months, which was feasible but not comfortable.
She had not told him because the condition was manageable and she had not wanted to make the timeline feel pressured when the work was going well. The work was going well. She was going to meet the deadline. There was no reason to introduce urgency.
She was also aware that not telling him was exactly the kind of thing she had been careful about throughout the research -- the careful management of information about the research and its implications. She had always told him what he needed to know. She was still telling him what he needed to know. The third condition was a logistics item, not a fundamental fact about the situation.
This was what she told herself on Friday evening, sitting at the guesthouse desk with the extension outline and the submission deadline in her peripheral awareness.
She picked up the personal journal and wrote: *I haven't told him about the submission deadline condition. I am managing it rather than sharing it. I notice this.*
She held the pen above the page.
She wrote: *This is exactly how it starts. The small thing not said. The managed information rather than the disclosed information. I am doing the thing I said I would not do.*
She set the pen down. She looked at the extension outline.
Then she picked the pen up again. *Correction: I am not doing the thing I said I would not do. I said I would not take more than I had been given. I said I would not claim his experience as mine. I said I would not treat understanding as ownership.* Pause. *This is different. This is information about the research timeline that affects the practical logistics of the next two months. This is relevant. I should tell him.*
She closed the journal. She would tell him on Monday. Not tonight -- the decision was still arriving, and she wanted to come to it with her own position already formed.
She opened the extension outline.
She worked until nine. The extension was good. The Ada section was the best thing in the paper. She made tea. She read the submission deadline requirements again. She thought about the two months remaining and about what they contained and about the specific quality of the time that remained between now and September.
She thought: I have been in Alderheath for nine months and I have three months left and then five months away and then a year after that. In fourteen months I will have been here for twenty-three months total. I will know this place in all four seasons twice over.
She thought: that is a long time. She thought: that is exactly the right length of time.
She put the tea down. She thought about the second Rosch data point -- or was it the third? She had seen the first one in the in-person visit. She did not know if Rosch had sent subsequent data directly to Corin without copying her. She had not asked.
She thought: there might be things he is processing that he has not yet put on the table.
She thought: there might be things I am processing that I have not yet put on the table.
She thought: we are both careful people who process before presenting. This is a quality we have in common. It is also how it was possible for both of us to have been moving in the same direction for months without either of us naming it until the precise version was ready.
The processing was the right practice. The presenting would follow when it was ready. She trusted this about him and she trusted it about herself and she was going to trust it about both of them together.
She closed the extension outline and went to bed.
The reading room would be there in the morning. He would be there. Both of them would bring to the table what they brought, and what was not yet ready would become ready in its own time, and when it came onto the table it would come clearly and completely, as it always had.
She was sure of this. She was also aware that she was very sure, and that being very sure was not the same as being correct.
The June night was warm and the guesthouse window was open and the river was audible two streets south, running lower than in April, the sound of a summer river rather than a snowmelt river. She listened to it for a while.
She thought: there is something he has not told me yet. She thought this with the specific quality of knowing rather than suspecting -- the quality that came from nine months of learning how he held information, when he was processing rather than withholding.
She thought: whatever it is, he will tell me when he has found the accurate words.
She closed her eyes. The river ran below the town in the June night. The ridge was somewhere above in the dark. Both of them were in Alderheath, in their separate rooms, carrying what they carried, which was not the same as hiding it. It was the necessary pause between receiving and saying, which every person who was serious about what they said required before speaking.
She trusted the pause.
She went to sleep wondering what the next thing would be, and not afraid of it.
Saturday morning. Market.
They met at the espresso stall at the east end as had become the pattern. She arrived first. He arrived three minutes later with his usual Saturday market bag, which meant he had already made a first pass through the food stalls before the espresso stop.
"Good morning," she said.
"Good morning," he said.
He bought espresso. They drank it standing at the counter. She thought about the Rosch email she had decided he might have received and had not asked him about. He thought about the Rosch email he had received and had not yet shared. Neither of them said anything for a moment.
"How is the extension going?" he said.
"Ada section is almost done," she said. "I think I have three weeks left on the full draft."
"Good," he said. "The submission deadline."
She looked at him. "What do you know about the submission deadline?"
"That your sabbatical approval conditions likely include a requirement to submit before you leave," he said. "Standard institutional practice for research-based sabbaticals." He looked at his espresso. "I assumed you had that condition and were managing the timeline."
She held her espresso cup and looked at him. "How long have you assumed this?"
"Since the approval came," he said. "Approximately two weeks."
She looked at her espresso. "I was going to tell you Monday," she said.
"I know." He looked at the market. "I was not asking because you would tell me when you were ready."
She thought about this. "Is there anything you are currently not telling me because you are not yet ready?"
He was quiet for a moment. She watched his expression -- the specific quality of someone considering whether to accelerate a timeline they had set for themselves.
"The Rosch monitoring," he said. "He sent a follow-up email two weeks ago. The cycle length has shortened again. 158 hours. Three consecutive shortening cycles."
She held this. 163 to 161 to 158. Each measurement shorter than the last.
"Two standard deviations," he said. "He wants a call on Tuesday."
She looked at her espresso. "And you are telling me now rather than Monday."
"You asked directly," he said. "I answer direct questions."
She thought about this. She thought about the two of them standing at the market espresso counter holding things they had decided to carry alone for a while before sharing. She thought about what Ada Veskin had said in the underground room: *the room is for all of them.* She thought about the made together symbol and what it meant and what it required.
"We are both very careful people," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"And sometimes the carefulness means we carry things separately that we could carry together."
He looked at her. "Yes," he said. "I have thought about this."
"Have you reached a conclusion?"
"Yes," he said. "The conclusion is that the carefulness is not a flaw. It's the quality that produced what we have. But the carefulness about timing -- knowing when a thing is ready to be said -- occasionally means that both of us are carrying the same thing without knowing the other is carrying it."
She thought about this. "The submission deadline and the Rosch data," she said. "Both are the same thing, in a sense. Both are about what happens next."
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the market around them -- the Saturday market, the familiar stalls, the vendors she recognized after nine months of Saturday mornings here. "Tuesday call with Rosch," she said. "Should I be on it?"
He was quiet for a moment. "Yes," he said. "I want you on it."
She nodded once. "Then I will be."
He finished his espresso. She finished hers. They put the cups on the counter and moved through the market in the established Saturday way, each with their respective purchases, the routes overlapping at the junction points.
At the garlic stall she selected two heads from the back row, where the better variety was. He was beside her, examining a root vegetable she had not bought before.
"The June garlic is different from the spring garlic," she said. "More pungent."
"More settled," he said. "It's had more time."
She looked at him. He was looking at the garlic, reading it the way the current week's competence made him read root materials: with the specific quality of knowing that came through handling.
"More time," she said.
"Yes," he said. "Same plant. More time. Different result."
She looked at the garlic in her hand. She thought about what more time meant in the context of what they were -- what was still developing, what was still in the process of becoming what it would be. The six items on the list. The extension that would be submitted. The semester that would come. The return. The sabbatical year. All of it requiring more time.
She thought: we are the same people we were in October. We are also very different people. More settled, more pungent, more ourselves because we have had more time.
She put the garlic in her bag. He put his root vegetable in his. They continued through the market.
At the junction before their routes separated, she said: "I am going to tell you the submission deadline specifics on Monday."
"And I will tell you the full Rosch data," he said.
"Good," she said.
"Good," he said.
They went in their respective directions. The Alderheath Saturday morning was the Saturday morning. The summer was coming -- she could feel it in the warmth of the morning sun, in the quality of the air that was different from the spring air, the valley changing the way it changed through seasons: the same valley, different each week, the difference accumulating until one day you noticed you were in a different season than when you started.
She walked home carrying the summer garlic and thought about the Tuesday call and about the Rosch data and about what the next weeks would hold. She thought about the extension and the submission and September and February. She thought about the things they were carrying separately and what it would mean to carry them together, which she thought was what they were moving toward.
Both of them, carefully, in the same direction.
Still.
He walked home the north way, through the market's quieter edge, and thought about the Saturday morning and about what had been said.
She had asked him directly. He had told her. She had disclosed the thing she had been processing. He had disclosed the thing he had been processing. The exchange had the quality of all their exchanges: clear, without drama, the information given and received at its accurate weight rather than expanded or compressed.
He thought about what this said about what they were.
In the first months he had managed everything carefully -- every disclosure timed, every piece of information released when he had found the precise words for it. This was still true. But the quality of the managing had changed. In the first months it had been the management of someone who was not sure the other person could receive difficult information without changing the nature of what was between them. Now it was the management of someone who trusted the reception and was simply waiting for the right timing.
That was a different thing. The trust was the difference.
He arrived at the workshop and went in and put the market bag on the counter and looked at the geological samples from the current cycle that were waiting on the assessment bench. He picked one up. He read it in the specific way that geological assessment weeks made materials readable: the thermal history, the composition variation, the specific record of what the stone had been through.
He thought about the Rosch data and about 158 hours and about the Tuesday call and about Mira saying: I will be on it.
He set the sample down. He opened the Ledger. He wrote the Saturday entry:
*Market this morning. I told her about the 158-hour data. She asked directly. She told me about the submission deadline condition. Both of us had been carrying separate things in the same direction.*
He paused. He wrote: *She said: we are very careful people and sometimes the carefulness means we carry things separately that we could carry together. She was right. We agreed to put both things on the table on Monday. We will do this.*
He added, in the smallest writing he used for the things that were most honest: *I am not afraid of the Rosch data. I am aware of it, I am processing it, I will respond to it with what it requires. I am not afraid. This is new. In the first year I was afraid of everything the data might mean. Now I am simply attending to it.*
He read this.
He wrote: *The difference is that I am attending to it with someone. That changes the quality of the attending.*
He closed the Ledger. He looked at the north window.
Monday would come. They would put what they were carrying on the table. They would attend to it together. And whatever it required from them, they would face it in the established quality of what they had built: clear, careful, real.
Still. Both of them. In the same direction.
